Usually metal pieces made specially for their purpose - to protect their wearer's body against thrust, stabs and any other kind of attacks. Comprises of many parts and comes in many forms.

- Brigandine
- Form of coat-of-plates with hundreds of small plates, partially covering each other. Mobile yet protective.
- Coif
- Hood of fabric or mail worn under a helmet. By the twelfth century it often incorporated a ventail.
- Helm, Great Helm
- Helmet surrounding the whole head. Usually consist of 4-5 metal plates riveted together. Worn over a mail or a small steel cap.
- Poleyn
- Armor protecting the knee.
