Y-shaped metal goads strapped to the heel, used to drive the horse on. Dating from early antiquity. Early medieval spurs were of simple prick type; rowel spurs date from the very late thir­teenth century.

The handle of a sword. Mostly made of wire, leather, wood, ivory, bone or horn. Also a method of holding a sword.
Spaudler
A light laminated defence protecting the point of the shoulder and top of the arm, especially popular in Germany.
Standard
A mail collar common in the fifteenth century.
Nagan
Sword with a serrated edge; hilt is padded and fitted with a spiked pommel.
