A heraldic recognitive device fixed to the top of the great helm, introduced in the second half of the thirteenth and in wide use by the fourteenth century.

- Edge
- The sharp, cutting part of a blade. Swords are single or double-edged.
- Longbow
- Archer’s weapon for launching arrows. Draws 30-36 inches and ranges over 300 yards. Very effective vs. unarmed enemies.
- Nasal
- Plate defence on early medieval helmets, often riveted to the bottom of the skull to cover the nose and middle of the face.
